Remember the good ol' days of the bathroom bills, and how a bunch of companies just pulled out of states that enacted them?

Where is that support now? Where are the companies voting with their dollars to remove support from hatred? Maybe they're out there, but I have heard only crickets, as women/queer/trans hate laws ramp up at a shocking rate.

@taedryn here in Georgia, the Republican leadership would rather avoid culture war conflict in favor of "pro-business" policies. And the threat of boycott or divestment helps to encourage them to have that position. But this year, there is a youth healthcare ban that passed the state senate. The state legislature is so gerrymandered that most legislators fear a primary challenge much more than a general election one, so even though transphobia seems to be a losing electoral strategy, it still might make sense for them to pursue it because it's catnip to a certain section of the Republican base

@taedryn in every one of these states there are grassroots efforts to fight this legislation, but the people who need to be convinced are Republican politicians, which is tough but not always impossible

@MousyAesthete now if only the allies would learn as quickly.

@taedryn the anti-trans hate machine learned their lesson from North Carolina, so now they advance model legislation in many states at once to blunt the effectiveness and possibility of boycotts or other similar actions

@MousyAesthete @taedryn This is a really clear way of explaining the Georgia situation and also why the political culture here is a bit different from other Southern states. In fact, this even has explanatory power about why our Republican governors often do some not-very-Republican things; they need Atlanta, Athens, and Savannah way more than many in the legislature do.

@roadriverrail @taedryn metro Atlanta now dominates Georgia politics in a way that has never been true before. Even though the metro area is solidly Democratic, there are still more Republican votes coming from the Atlanta area than anywhere else

@MousyAesthete @taedryn Wow. Is that mostly a testament to population difference between the cities and the rural areas? As in, we have more people, so we also have more Republicans?

Granted, I suspect an Atlanta Republican is more likely to be a "pro-business" one who'd like to stay out of culture wars.
