Imagine extreme show don't tell.
Imagine starting with a screenplay for a movie in the narrating style of Inter5tella 5555, zero exposition except possibly through vague lyrics that mostly set a mood, otherwise all visual.
Then you novelize that movie.
Would that novel be terrible, awesome or both?-

@clacke The novelization of Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey was better than the movie imo clacke likes this. -

First of all, are there examples of good novelizations of movie-first stories?
I remember really liking The Abyss, but I don't give my critical reading skills at the time much credit. -

@clacke I remember the first Terminator having a really good novelization by Randall Frakes. It even gave some more in depth details not shown in the movie like the Terminator's POV as it dies.

I think I read and liked 2001 too. A story very different from the movie. -

@clacke AFAIK the book and the movie script were written at the same time. I wouldn't say they are different, just the book adds a lots of details, and helps a lot in understanding the movie (which is quite cryptic, if you don't know the plot beforehand).
That said, to answer your original question, I'd kill for a good book adaptation of "The Matrix" (if it doesn't exist yet).

@clacke Any novelization by Alan Dean Foster is worth reading. Brian Daley novelized TRON, also the Star Wars Han Solo books, and a ton of Robotech books cowritten.
