翠星石 (suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com)'s status on Thursday, 23-Feb-2023 20:13:01 JST 翠星石 @dcc There's no singular BSD license, there's the 4-clause BSD, 3-clause BSD, 2-clause BSD and 0-clause BSD just to name a few.
BSD 4-clause turns software proprietary if you do something as trivial as combining code from just a few pieces of software under the same license (with different advertising clauses).
Really, all BSD licenses are more restrictive than the GPLv3, as they demand acceptance just to use the software.
Meanwhile, the GPLv3 doesn't require you to accept it just to use the software.
I seem to have come across quite a few people who recommend using a BSD license, but also have utter contempt for the users freedom? -

翠星石 (suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com)'s status on Thursday, 23-Feb-2023 20:18:35 JST 翠星石 @sysrq It's very difficult to validly place something into the public domain and in many countries doing so is not permitted.
The only license I've found that has a good chance of doing so properly is still in the drafting stage and is the WPDD: https://wpdd.info/
With the GPLv3+, you can defend freedom with your copyright, so you should jump at the chance to make the proprietary masters seethe rather than make them content.
