That was nirvana.
Then, bonus points to me - I had actual ISDN for a time!
Extra bonus points - this was 1998 - and a Telsat Canada demo satellite Internet dish (using DirectPC tech) that gave me about 25MB down, with the return via ... a 56k modem! They set it into my backyard and we wrote it in the 1999 book, predicting that one day, satellite-based Internet would be a BIG thing.
Epic times!

Over the years, I've done quite a few keynotes for the National Rural Telecom Cooperate - it's the group charged with trying to bring broadband to rural communities. It's been a huge challenge and continues to be so; satellite like this was always one of the options despite its drawbacks. Progress is slow but steady!

It kind of made sense if you were in a rural area, with no chance of cable and all calls being toll. -

Lauren Weinstein (lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org)'s status on Monday, 20-Feb-2023 22:06:58 JST Lauren Weinstein @PJ_Evans @EricCarroll @jimcarroll There are still rural areas -- even right here in L.A. County, where there is no cable, no Internet (unless you can afford satellite and are in the right spots), and no mobile service.

Ya telephony return was a thing in cable land for a while as people tried to avoid a 2 way capable plant rebuild.I was in the "that's a really stupid idea" camp.
