Internet Explorer has a bad rep (for the most part deservedly so) but it did pioneer a lot stuff that we take for granted in web development--like the basic idea that the HTML code can be messed about with after the page has been rendered with changes being reflected in real time. (Netscape at the time had some similar tech, but IE went way beyond that.)
