@atomicpoet I feel like they should really just stop trying, to be honest. The users clearly don’t want it, no point in pushing it on them, all they’ll do is upset people like they keep doing

Google doesn't give a damn about the Fediverse's social norms. There's a lot of Google employees on here, and their attitude pretty much is "if you haven't implemented no-follow on robots.txt, it's open season."
The best way to counter Google is to build opt-in social discovery for people who enthusiastically want to be discovered, and do so in a way that is better than Google's current offerings.

Personally I would far rather this site wasn’t indexed at all, only because of how much people and companies abuse social media to unfairly limit or criticize others.
Such as not getting a job because of a social media post the company disagreed with, etc.
It feels like too much power and personal information to just hand out.
Social media shouldn’t be like that, in my opinion.I can see why people would want it, but I think it comes at a greater cost than they realize

Chris Trottier (atomicpoet@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 14-Feb-2023 07:23:25 JST Chris Trottier @alfredohno Many people do want social discovery. Otherwise, there wouldn't be such a demand for them.
Inevitably, social discovery is going to happen -- but maybe not from people you like.
For example, there's lots of Fediverse social discovery to happen by way of Google. People don't seem very concerned about that, though.
