   There was a recent controversy on Gab that reminded me of why I rarely use DM's and whenever I do I am usually very succinct, neutral, and brief in my responses, and why if I have a beef with someone I always hash it out in public, and if someone tries to drag me into drama, I simply don't respond. Dm's are toxic, I have seen many men destroy their entire reputations over what they say in them, unless you are just sharing memes or whatever you shouldn't use them.
   
   You will never be able to character assassinate me over what I say in DM's, because who I am in any longform DM conversation is identical to my public persona.

     Ill dm, I just won't say anything I wouldn't say publicly in case someone threatened to drop them for whatever reason. If something private is discussed obviously I won't share it, I'm against that morally and to be subjective doing so would greenlight the same thing to be done me.

     I trust about 4 people on fedi enough to break that rule with tbh, one of them I'm married to and usually shitposting from the same sofa with. It's a good one to live by imo.
     
     And then even if you trust your admin, you gotta think about the other end's too.

     I wouldn't break it with anyone. Rarely do I say anything in DMs. Never anything that I wouldn't say publicly. If anything, I am much more caring and concerned in DM if I do at all.

     Fair enough. I don't think that it is bad at all to use DM for something like that so long as the rule is applied. I apply it to all communications, personally. I don't text or even speak on the phone about things I wouldn't say publicly, barring obviously personal information that I wouldn't publicize about myself of others, but I don't even want to hear it in DMs.
