Elon Musk is really an imbecile, an idiot disguised in the persona of faux-brilliance.
This is not about cutting off an API.
This is about destroying any remaining shred of trust with the developer community. With trust gone, there is only a burning pile of, well, no developers.
He wanted to build an 'everything app.' The idea now is just LOL. What developer would dare to commit any time and effort to someone who has destroyed TRUST.
TRUST is everything. When its gone, it doesn't come back.

@joshsusser @f00fc7c8 He wants to be WeChat; he has said that publicly. To do it on his own would be a massive lift. But, as someone suggested elsewhere, there might be a number of right-wing brogrammers who would chomp at the bit to help him.

@f00fc7c8 @jimcarroll He's got this idea he calls the X app that does "everything", meaning it inserts itself into every transaction possible. But one company can't compete with the rest of the world over everything, so the best he can hope for is to build a walled garden with no exits. Lock all the customers inside, then charge them for everything you can fold into that system. He's betting that the value provided by extreme centralization will defeat, well, basically all we know of economics let alone psychology.

well that's just a lie, if anything he's been removing features from twitter, i.e. making it "less things", for his entire reign as CEO

Even if that is the case, why would any developer want to devote any time whatsoever to investing time in that? Trust matters.

@mithlond @jimcarroll since the official twitter app can be reverse engineered, a 3rd party app can use the same API/key as the official app.

I use two automated tools which can push updates out, one is FSPoster, the other is Revive Old Posts.
Both would stop working unless the developers pay the API fee. I'm not sure what their plans are at this point. I don't use them to post to Twitter anymore.

@jimcarroll on a more serious note - how will this affect personal blogs and the like who push their updates on the bird network? I assume they will all have to use some sort of plugin with a credit account linked back to Elon. Seems like this goes pretty deep when users won’t be able to publish works like this. Personally I don’t see this as a problem because publishing into the fediverse is clearly the way of the future.
