The one outlet I decide to change out in the five minutes between calls today ended up being the outlet serving as the de facto junction box for both my entire living room and
my garage door opener. It’s going to require a complete rewire before I can use my garage door again.

@rmd1023 @hacks4pancakes an old coworker turned me on to these little dudes, and I haven't looked back. Solid, stranded, it doesn't matter! Only thing that sucks is they take up more room than wire nuts. :/

@hacks4pancakes Fuuuuck. That's annoying. Good luck. For the most part, people will use the two sets of screws on a duplex receptacle to handle feeding things downstream. If the USB ones have stranded leads, be careful as I've found splicing stranded to solid with wirenuts to be challenging at times. (Easy for the twisting of the wirenut to pull the stranded part up into the spring so the solid wire isn't making great connection. Putting a little s curve in the solid wire before laying the stranded wire along it can help a lot)

@paul_ipv6 I’m so frustrated right now because I know every outlet will be like this now and I was planning to install usb ones (which are far less kludge friendly)

some also check polarity/GFCI while plugged in (i like Klein tools). while you're poking and labeling, may as well find all the shortcuts they took...
i've used mine almost as much as the toner tracing network/phone wiring.

@paul_ipv6 I’m going to have to. The box is labeled fairly well but they put a ton of stuff on one circuit

feels...
if you don't already own a circuit breaker finder, get one. i've owned multiple houses over the years and in every one, without exception, i've needed it to figure out what odd last minute thing some electrician added to a circuit that was totally unrelated to the rest and not labeled in the breaker box.

@horse @hacks4pancakes I’ve seen those but not used them. It looks like it might be too bulky for something like a 1-gang device box but if there’s room, very useful.

@rmd1023 @hacks4pancakes Agreed. I've been able to fit 4 of the 3-wire version into a 1-gang with an outlet, but it may have required an extra dimension or two.
