@fordyenn The protocol itself, no, and not the software that implements it. In practical terms, though, the system is dependent on the IANA's system of root servers.
It's been done: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirai_(malware) . These devices are all woefully insecure and shit is gonna get very real very quickly if/when IPv6 is rolled all the way out and kills NAT. Consumer routers are not going to be up to the task of sensibly filtering traffic and these stupid smart devices are not going to be good at defending themselves.
> Violence is more funny though
Accurate; after contemplating guys kicking in doors and smashing Alexas and busting up smart fridges, I spent too much time picturing people storming the datacenters with hastily assembled EMPs in gym bags.
@p@fordyenn@FrailLeaf@Halo >hurt the company with infinity resources >hurt the retarded bugmen with limited income Even in this hypothetical its still easier to target the random idiots that buy these smart devices with larger gain to be had because most of them are trivial to hack, at least from what I've read about in reports, and you could create a bot net of all of these tiny computers once you find an exploit. Violence is more funny though
@p@fordyenn@FrailLeaf@Halo >tfw no gang of bros breaking into every single home in the city and destroying every smart device in sight before hitting the next house SOON
@fishsticks@fordyenn@FrailLeaf@Halo Way easier to just go for the servers. The devices that don't phone home will remain unaffected. And instead of busting into datacenters with EMPs, it's even easier to do it over the net instead, say you use an eastern bloc VPS paid for in BTC.
@p@fordyenn@Halo the idea of having a program learn from your activity is already creepy & this nigga thought to install it many years ago? Why do people jump every new shiny thing without giving it a minute of thought :lain:
