    Thinking of upgrading the borg.social server hardware with something that's still relatively low on power usage, but a lot more powerful than the ARM hardware I use now.

    Advertised is the following power consumption:
    – IDLE : ≃1..9W
    – CPU Stress : ≃15W
    – CPU+GPU Stress : ≃18W
    – Power-off : ≃0.25W
    – Suspend : ≃0.6W

    Hardware:
    * Board+CPU: Odroid H3, Intel Quad-Core Prozessor Jasper Lake N5105 - €190
    * RAM: 16GB DDR4-SODIMM - €42
    * Storage: Something NVMe probably? 1TB - €80, depending on whether an external USB SSD works more stable than the current machine I might just use the old one I have.
    * Power supply: whatever fits - €25-ish?
    * Enclosure: €18
    Total costs: €355 (€275 if no need for new storage)

    That's... not cheap. But it'd be a lot more future proof and stable, so it might be worth seriously considering this.

      @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/odroid-h3/
      2x SATA 3.0, so I don't think it'll be a monster for storage per se

      @dwarf@borg.social I've been looking for a low-powered device to act as media machine. This is well within the price range, and the hardware should be more than adequate as well. How many SATA ports does it have? Perhaps it can double as a storage server.

      @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl I like that it has 2x2.5Gbit NIC though, could be a nice firewall too.

      @dwarf@borg.social Oh yeah, that won't suffice. 4 is the hard minimum, but I'd rather have at least 8.

      @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl I've got a odroid c2 and c4, both are great, though obviously limited because they're raspberry pi tier ARM machines.

      @dwarf@borg.social I might still want one to function as media player, it's x86 which I still prefer since I'm old. I've looked at odroid before, they seem pretty nice.

      @dwarf@borg.social This is the same you who didn't want to renew the domain because costs. You sure about this?

      @rqsd@borg.social I've already made up my mind about the domain, don't worry about it. The question is whether I can go any lower with power usage without running into potential bottlenecks or weird almost unsupported setups.

      @flandrescarlet @dwarf also protip: if power consumption is a thing for you, use sata ssds. They are a lot more power efficient than nvme.

      @flandrescarlet @dwarf I use an odroid h3 yes. One thing to keep in mind before buying, doublecheck your ram and nvme. The odroid seems notoriously picky with what models of ram and nvme it will accept. (This isn't specific to odroid either, it's a typical thing for these DIY type of boards as they don't have the same level of testing done to them as the more mainstream motherboards on the market)

      @dwarf I have fedora 37 server installed on it. So far it runs pretty darn smoothly for something not using more than 10W.

      For hardware I picked some g.skill ripjaws (see https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-h3/hardware/ram, I have the 2x8gb version of the one listed there) and a crucial p5 nvme. For extra storage I have a crucial mx500 sata ssd. I have not yet had any problems with it.
