    @SuperDicq what’s your take on T500 in 2022? (I’ve just been denied a T420s w/ coreboot and fhd screen)

      @threia@cdrom.tokyo T500 > T420s

      The T420s does not support libreboot or coreboot without blobs. The T500 can be fully free, so I recommend that one.

      @threia@cdrom.tokyo If you have the money I recommend buying buying a T500 from https://tehnoetic.com/TET-T500

      It's fully refurbished, tested, preflashed and with warranty. But buying a used one and flashing it yourself can save a lot of money.

      I personally don't know what a good way to source these types of machines is nowadays. I do know that the X200 is by the most common one you can get, but it is a small form factor laptop. A T400(s) is also a good option if you want something bigger than a X200.

      I've owned my X200 since 2013, I bought it exactly at the point of where enterprises were getting rid them by the truckload (the famous 4 year deprecation cycle) and they could be had really cheaply.

      @SuperDicq thanks

      thing is I’m looking for a thinkpad that is not an x60t. I like mine but the hinge seems like it would not want to be dropped or else (it has that one central hinge) (also, apart from the top cover, its in p good condition) and while I try and be careful abt my stuff, i’d like one I can take elsewhere w/o being as concerned, also the x60 has a slightly small screen and I can’t take external screens everywhere

      so that said, what would you (if you want to) recommend I search for (the t420p was just really cheap for having the fhd screen and having been flashed) (I dont have the hardware to flash externally (yet))

      @threia@cdrom.tokyo Also if you're already used to having a X60 a X200/T400/T500 series will definitely be an upgrade for you.

      You will have about double the clock speed and you can have up to 8 GB ram.

      @threia@cdrom.tokyo Definitely not fast by today's standards, but still damn usable.

      Did you know that the X200 can actually output 4k video at 30 fps if you have the docking station with display port?

      @threia@cdrom.tokyo Oh yeah the person offering you the T500 with preflashed Coreboot/Libreboot sounds like a good deal. Even if it comes with Coreboot you can flash Libreboot on it yourself without external hardware. You only need external hardware for a machine that is still running the proprietary BIOS.

      The T500 also has two cores but they are from 2.2 to 2.8 GHz so they handle videos a lot better.

      I do want to clearify I don't think decoding 4k video is very fast but you can at least use a 4k screen as a monitor.

      @SuperDicq Yeah, most office software just runs fine, the x60 even does graphic stuff (the basic one) rather well and has 0 problems w/ a second screen The only thing bugging me is that running vids in a (normal) browser is ~4 load w/ 2 cores (badwolf went as low as 1.3 I think) but the main concern is it being rather small and I dont trust the hinge to survive drops (well).

      but 4k sounds sick. Well, the one that was selling the t420p has offered me a t500 w/ coreboot but said they could flash libreboot

      I am lacking a raspi, the one fren that has one only gets home like twice a year and idk if im into spending the moneys one one rn (look at the price smh)

      the t420p was abt 90 w/ shipping and im not sure if im willing to spend that much more, currently doing an internship for uni, maybe I can prolong it and even get a real job, i’ll have to see
