      @benhamill @junebug What about Warhammer 40,000? This universe is fucked up in its own right.

      @junebug Curious where you’d put:
      • Arrival
      • Annihilation (movie or books)
      • I, Robot
      • Armageddon
      • Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

      @benhamill @junebug I agree with the latter, but not with the former (the association with Dune). I'm open to be convinced though.

      @junebug @hypolite Yeah. Dune but falling entirely off the “accidentally selling fascism to people” cliff.

      @hypolite @junebug Big focus on in emperor and various factions within that empire that sometimes fight each other. Especially later in the books, the god-emperor is also deathless. Hyperspace is some eldritch bullshit. Creepy witch ladies. Everything is dismal. It vibes.

      @benhamill Not bad, not bad, but counter-points:
      • Emperor is a symbol rather than a sentient being which adventures we follow with barely contained glee.
      • There is more than one planet in WH40K (even if none of them matter much).
      • No McGuffin to justify the former in Dune.
      • Way, way more dakka.
      • Absolutely no revolutionary vibe in WH40K.
      • WH40K is Tolkien in space.
