I kind of get that businesses in the Fedi are going to have to try and figure out ways to fit in here, but it feels like them following hundreds and hundreds of accounts is just spamming to get noticed.
@evelyn It's unsolicited commercial 'look at me!', though... They're trying to attract you to their business, which is advertisement, no?
I will be putting a business of mine on the fediverse soon - and I wouldn't dream of mass-following people. Those create notifications for people, which feels about the same as an advertisement that the business exists. "Hey, notice me!"
@evelyn Sure, I don't mind if misguided people are doing it, that's their perogative. If they're trying to build an audience or something because they have aspiring commercial interests, they can get stuffed just like any other spammy business.
Fortunately the spammy business that spurred my initial thoughts is their own instance, so easy enough to cut out all of their current and any future intended drivel.
@kinetix People do that too. They follow people hoping to be looked at and followed back. Personal. But still advertising. ☝️
It's not a good way to get noticed. Ideally, people and companies alike, will contribute by posting, use the right hashtags, and be noticed the right way.
