There are three main functions of a BGS: crawling, storing, and serving data. Crawling and storing are proportional to the size of the network or slice of the network being targeted. Serving is proportional to number of consumers, which can be controlled. Primary costs are storage and bandwidth.

    Okay, I got an answer from Jake Gold, who works at #Bluesky.

    A BGS has relay functionality, but it also stores and indexes data too.

    Basically, a BGS is Google.
