@khinsen @tacaswell @IanSudbery @danielskatz I'm not sure I agree with the notion -- and maybe I'm misinterpreting -- that software embeds knowledge without itself being that knowledge.
My immediate thought was of fluid dynamics. Has software evolved independently of our understanding of fluid dynamics? No, but it has evolved with applied mathematics. But the distinction there from the software becomes fuzzy and difficult to perceive without resorting to similarly extremist definitions.

We've known about the correlation between hood height and pedestrian deaths since the 1980s. This study reaffirms prior knowledge.
My last pickup was an '86 4x4 F150. I could still lean in to check the oil and such easily enough while standing on the ground. I could reach over the bed rails to grab things out of the back.
My brother in law's '22 GMC 2500 4x4's hood is basically at my chin, about the same as the D700 Dodge stake truck I drove back in the '80s. Forget reaching over the side. It's the least useful pickup I've been around for anything other than towing. That's about the only thing he uses it for, towing a large horse trailer and a gooseneck flatbed for his hobby farm.

I was out skiing yesterday, and as often happens, you can get into delightful conversations while on the chairlift. I ended up sharing a few rides up with a lawyer, and we ended up speaking about changes in her profession, and the new areas of a specialty practice that are emerging.
We quickly began to focus our conversation on the issue of the growth of legal knowledge.
My comments to her were based on issues just covered in one of my 23 Trends for 2023, having to do with Knowledge Velocity, pointing out that the biggest challenge now facing the industry is the rapid growth of new knowledge - "how is any lawyer supposed to be able to keep up?"
And that became the basis for today's quote!
As I pointed out in that post, back in 1982, it was estimated that the total volume of human knowledge was doubling every 12 months - but IBM has recently suggested that the impact of the Internet is such that it is now doubling every 12 hours. That's a pretty staggering change - and this is before the massive knowledge generation that is now coming with text-based A.I. tools.
