The full disk encryption is adding some time to the install process.
It's tempting to use the time to check eBay for more 2nd hand hardware to slap Linux on, but then I will risk turning into @neil at some point.
@whitequark @promovicz @schrotthaufen @mainframed767 I've been trying to figure out how to apply a simple Windows update to my mom's Win 10 PC.
Sometime last fall it decided it didn't know how to apply an update so it just failed.
Tried the troubleshooting app MS supplies. It shrugged and claimed everything is fine.
Tried to get an update file from the MS Catalog site and figured out how to apply it. Realized I need the x64 version, probably. Started the process.
It returned with a message saying "this update does not apply to your system" or something similar.
Well, who needs security patches anyway....
Could your tool help figure out what is actually going on?
@TriptychTwinsRidesAgain "These doily-minded nonsensicals, from the zealots to the #BeKind middlings, have forced intelligent women to engage - FOR AN ENTIRE DECADE OR MORE - with minds that say "humans can't tell which sex anyone is by looking!” or “It's bigotry to want female only rape crisis centres!” or “If that dog-rapist says (s)he's a woman she is one!"
And they’ve called themselves nuanced and kind in the process.
It is not kind to be so ignorant, to be so blithe about women’s rights, and about our foremothers who fought for them. To call rape victims bigots. This is not kindness. None of it has been kind."

I guess being autistic plays a huge role in why Zoë Straub's music is such a lifeline for me. Her songs hit me in a way that nothing else can, becoming this constant, comforting presence that helps me navigate the chaos of emotions I often struggle to process.
It's not often you see autistic folks like me being open to emotional release. Hell, most of the autistic people I know in real life can't even let their guard down around their parents. But Zoë's music? It's different. It's like she's found a way to bypass all my defenses and speak directly to my soul.
Sure, I might be able to squeeze out a tear around my family, but it's nothing compared to what happens when I'm alone with Zoë's music. We're talking full-on emotional floodgates here. After a session with her songs, my clothes are soaked through, but I feel lighter, like I've finally been able to let go of all the pent-up feelings I've been carrying around. It's intense, it's personal, and it's exactly what I need to keep going.
@lispi314 @alwayscurious @theearthisapringle @swordgeek An unexplored aspect of this is that "JIT" typically refers to often conflated but unrelated things:
1. Performing transformations on the AST/IR to optimize the code abstractly, and
2. Dynamic translation into native machine code and injection of that into the live process.
It's #1 that gets you the vast majority of the performance benefits, but #2 that introduces all the vulnerabilities (because it's all YOLO, there's no formal model for safety of any of that shit).
I just had a thought. I'll create a “Hall of Shame” page on my blog to list services that won't improve their service and process.
It'll be first-hand experiences & _after_ exhausting options… to be fair.
Regular people can't do anything other than this.
Hmm…
