    @cwebber

I mentioned often how the way we accepted the fediverse to evolve, via post-facto interoperability, continually introduces protocol decay. Resulting in an app-centric fedi that represents more of a universal microblogging environment, with a range of abstractions being introduced besides the instance.

As you say, there's only actors. My observation is that fediverse-we-have side-tracked from ActivityPub, losing much of its versatility and power, and that a course correction is in order for current fedi to be on track again towards becoming the Future of Social networking.

    > My biggest regret

This is not a past station. A proper grassroots standardization process should be able to guide evolution in healthy direction. My conclusion is that fedi is currently at an inflection point where it chooses its future: back to original power, or a glorified distributed microblog.

I put my concerns, thoughts on solutions, and a brainstorm in a lengthy article:

I feel that all Mastodon Administrators should have an option to place a non-intrusive (rotating) banner on their instance.

As in this case, it can be used to make users aware that funding is welcome for stability.

But I can also imagine that it is a way to attract some income from other parties. If their users do not like it, then those users can move to another instance that does not do that.

I would think positively about parties that support my instance.

Since today I am hosting my own #Pixelfed instance.

As VPS i am using #Hetzner, a german cloud provider. The pricing is really good and also the web interface is great. I can really recommend them.

As server operating system I am using #YunoHost and it's just awesome! I never imagined that it can be so simple to setup a server and install applications on it. Pixelfed was basically a one-click installation and everything worked out of the box.

:skull360: We have now successfully upgraded to v4.3.0-alpha.4+mementomods-2024-06-30+pr30850. The server has Mastodon Bird UI 2.0.0rc38 installed.

The branch is now synced and up-to-date and 238 commits ahead from the last version 2024-06-01.

This version contains some fixes to both Mastodon and Mastodon Bird UI. Most notably the new experimental hover cards feature is available for our instance.

As usual, please tell me about any strange things you may encounter with this Mastodon version. We're running bleeding edge after all.

I hope you enjoy your time here. Feel free to send me a message if you have anything in mind. :bunhdheart:

Hey I am the author of fedipage, sorry im just seeing this. I am happy to help.

So for starters the documentation is pretty much the readme. It goes over, step-by-step, how to setup an instance.

As for the point, its largely so you can host a static page, like a blog, and have that page look like and be interact-able as if it were a fediverse/mastodon instance. In other words you can follow the instance as you would someone from the fediverse. New posts (pages, blog posts, whatever) will show as a post ont he fediverse and show in followers feeds. Their comments and replies to post will show as comments on your blog attached to the particular blog post, etc. Boosts and likes also will show up on yoru blog page.

It basically lets you have a static site generated that has all the features of a fediverse account more or less.

Hope that helps, let me know if you have any questions. For reference the fedipage git has the instructions int he readme here:

It depends on your instance, the admin has to pay for an integrated translation service (usually an open source one such as LibreTranslate).

Ask your admin if they have this activated on your instance.

As Matte says, if the service is active there will be a "translate" button below posts in other languages.

(Note that for this to work correctly, you have to set your own language settings correctly, more info at https://fedi.tips/setting-your-language-preferences-on-mastodon-and-filtering-out-posts-in-other-languages/)
