    > I get the distinct sense that this is a place I wouldn't want to live for an extended period of time, even ignoring money.

    It's fine. I like it.

    > I have been able to find better of each food somewhere in the US.

There is 0% chance that you've found better Chinese food in the US. This is a shenanigan. I don't know what you meant about "connections" but basically I have lived in a Chinesey neighborhood for 20 years, I've had "didn't realize that I was getting dragged along to this 'family dinner' in order to boost the numbers" Chinese food, I've had "If I knew this was going to be a wedding, I wouldn't have worn jeans" Chinese food, I've had "What do you mean your *husband* is back? Did he see my car? Bring my shoes to the back door while I find my pants...oh, also thanks for the dumplings." Chinese food, man.

The thing with New York (FUCK NEW YORK) is that the Chinese food there is the SF-Canto style. Zero exceptions. Every time I have had food from some Chinese place in New York (FUCK NEW YORK) it was some bullshit place that only knows starch+stirfry, the kind of place that thinks "soy sauce ketchup" is a condiment.

    > I've had better Mexican in Texas.

I have, I think, spent more time in Texas than you have in Los Angeles. LA Mexican food is Baja California style, Texas is the other side of Mexico, the food's different.

    > I've had better Thai and Italian in New York.

Italian is basically impossible to get in LA. San Diego has good Italian, there's a place called Civico? Best Italian I have had in my life and FUCK NEW YORK.

The Thai food in Thai town is better than anything I had in New York and FUCK NEW YORK.

    > the coffee here is slightly bad. Lefties are supposed to be known for good coffee,

It's not a lefty place. Look at the voter turnout; it's an apolitical place. The SGV, there are more guns in the dumpling zone than in the entire city of Austin, I'm sure.

Anyway, yeah, the cofe isn't great in LA. It's a tea city, not a cofe city.

    > I am not someone who enjoys the type of entertainment LA has,

I thought you liked anime and video games. (Anyone that doesn't like music is lying.)

    > cost of staying,

I can't argue with that. It's been fucked, people keep voting for these stupid fucking mayors from SF. They don't even go here. And those guys keep trying to remake LA because they think that making a big enough name for yourself as mayor of LA will get you to the presidency, and it won't, not ever. The shit a mayor has to do in order to get anything done is shit that precludes you getting anywhere with a hostile press.

    > I will say that I have significantly more respect for the location now than I did before coming, but I do not like it here.

It's not for everyone. I don't wanna go out of my way to convince a person to spend more time in LA, I think there's already too many fuckin' people, but anyway, even I'm not there for now, and it's my favorite place on earth.
