a split staircase with a landing in the middle the floors are an engineered wood you walk down the first 8 steps facing east then switch directions on the landing and walk the remaining 8 steps facing west going down the first half of the staircase, the handrail is on your right; once you get to the landing, the handrail on the right disappears and now it's on your left to carry anything down the stairs, you need to switch hands at the landing if you want to hold the handrail for both halves of the trip
