There's a popular "digital rights" perspective that turns "not having kids on social media before 14 or 16" into a binary. That allows to make this a thing about overreach and censorship and all that. In combination with the complexities of ensuring access/restrictions it builds a great straw man.
But I do totally think that just throwing kids into general social media (think Instagram, TikTok but also Bluesky or Mastodon) is harmful to them and is just us older people being lazy and not wanting to give them time to grow into this digital life.
But it's not a binary. There is value in creating spaces for kids to express themselves and find community and their own voice. Question is how to build that in ways to protect them - not just from creeps but also the negative side effects of many commercial social media platforms.
It's not "but Kids need to learn to live with social media so let's throw them on TikTok". It's about figuring out ways for kids (or TBH some older people as well) to make those experiences in the digital "non-swimmer's pool". (Not sure if digital swimmers exist.)
My issue with Mastodon is it gains so little traction versus other platforms.
It's nice, but is sort of a modern LJ. Quiet, but my capacity to connect with most furs I know is near zero.
The way it is set up is a strength and weakness from what I can tell.
And So It Begins (Needles & Pins)
Fedivision 2024 opened my eyes to how much good music is being made by independent artists on decentralised platforms.
It inspired me so much I chose to end my Spotify subscription and instead commit to spend the money on 12 indy tracks per month.
The stipulation is that the artists have a presence in The Fediverse (maybe featuring on Radio […]

@hypolite The problem is the phantom concept of AI polluting the decisions.
If you could say:
If a platform allows AI then it will become nothing but spam
If a platform blocks AI then it will block people using Ethical AI
But, part of it is that Ethical AI isn't real, and AI is a problematic branding term.
But part of it is that Google/Microsoft/Facebook are allowing AI posts because that way their AI marketing is easier, but it's ruining platforms.
It's really obvious but it's so hard to put into words.
@bynkii @evan fediverse is inherently vulnerable to different classes of attacks (as well as a few of the same classes or attacks) compared to traditional, monolithic social media platforms.
It's important to identify the likely vectors now and have plans against them rather than taking a purely reactionary posture and constantly being one step behind the bad actors.
Remember: always ask yourself "WW4D" - "what would 4chan do?"
