Tweet by Edward Ahmed Mitchell @EdAhmedMitchell Asalaamu alaykum Sumayya. On behalf of @CAIRNational , I want to share our apology for this mistake: During the gala, we recognized a large number of students, journalists, medical workers, activists, and other Americans who have played an important role in speaking out against the genocide in Gaza over the past year. Due to a vetting oversight on our part, we did include at least one advocate for Palestinians who has expressed positions on Syria that contradict our values. Our position has been the same for over a decade: we support the Syrian people in their struggle for freedom from Bashar Al Assad, a war criminal responsible for heinous, genocidal violence, including the use of chemical weapons. We apologize for this oversight, we will exercise greater caution in the future, and we will continue to stand in solidarity with all people facing oppression around the world, from Palestine to Syria to Sudan to China to Myanmar to India and beyond, insha Allah.

UPDATE: The Deputy Director of CAIR, Edward Ahmed Mitchell came on Twitter to respond to complaints and state that the CAIR apologizes and says the awarding was a "vetting oversight."

Mitchell says that the CAIR board plans to meet on Monday to discuss the matter.

As of yet, CAIR itself hasn't formally commented, nor has it revoked the award.
