The top is our planet 268 million years ago when the continents were bunched together, the middle is the present day, and the bottom is the estimated position of the continents in 8.4 million years (the time when the satellite will fall to Earth). The continents will still be quite recognizable then.

For #SilentSunday a silent satellite. LAGEOS-1 is a passive 400kg brass/aluminum/glass/germanium sphere. It's made to reflect laser beams from Earth to measure tectonic plate movements associated with continental drift.
In the silence of space since May 1976, it contains a plaque designed by Carl Sagan depicting Earth's geologic past, present, and future. #space #geology #science https://lageos.gsfc.nasa.gov/
