This is an interesting study. I think we live very simply but we overshoot a couple of the DLS standards. But with the 40% they talk about on top of individual household resourcing added as public goods (libraries, parks, public transport, research institutes etc), I think I could live very well. (It's long but scroll down to the heading "3. How much growth is required to ensure good lives for all?" if you don't want read it all) https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2452292924000493

@LupinoArts @tante https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2452292924000493. 'With this approach, good lives can be achieved for all without requiring large increases in total global throughput and output. Provisioning decent living standards (DLS) for 8.5 billion people would require only 30% of current global resource and energy use, leaving a substantial surplus for additional consumption, public luxury, scientific advancement, and other social investments.'

N.b. resource use, not labour time though.

The world's entire population could be easily housed and fed with only 30% of the current global labour output - our collective suffering is manufactured by capitalism.

@ChrisMayLA6 Not necessarily - I don't see in the article that he claims that degrowthers are actually claiming this, just that it is part of the 'image problem'. I'd contend that that image is indeed the result of PR campaigns from growth advocates, rather than what degrowth advocates actually say, but that it's very real. However, he still doesn't seriously engage with work such as Jason Hickels on Decent Living Standards for example. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2452292924000493

New paper by Jason Hickel and Dylan Sullivan on energy needs for a planned economy that provides a Decent Living Standard for everyone on earth. TL;DR it's about a third of current energy use. We should do less useless things for capitalists and finance and more useful things for people who do not have a decent living standard. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2452292924000493
