Maintaining a slow but steady pace of work on what started as a pet project, but may yet become something bigger. Thanks to my great colleague Katarzyna Odrobińska (see her other work here: https://www.artstation.com/katodrobinska) for lending her talents, as we're looking for a comic book-style look for a not-quite-serious post-apocalyptic dungeon crawler.
In this concept for outdoor environments you can see we're trying to follow the genre's traditional limitations, except one: the sight range.

For this character design (by Katarzyna Odrobińska, https://www.artstation.com/katodrobinska) we wanted to play with tropes. She was meant to be, as another person put it: "very cute but at the same time very I will cut you".
We needed to build a contrast between how she looks and what she does, or at least what she's willing to do. Hence the dagger and the teddy doubling as bumper.
We ended up with more detail than we planned, but it worked nice, so we'll keep it.

Here's the whole set of concepts for the main(ish) cast of a post-apocalyptic old-school dungeon crawler with a twist.
The oldschool part is the way the world is presented (fake first-person 3D where you only make 90 degree turns)..
The twist is bashing samey enemies in non-descript labyrinths gets old quick so the setting is a (hopefully) vibrant city and there's going to be an actual story (with a structure not unlike interactive fiction).

For the final character in this set, we wanted to convey a sense of power with a hint of ruthlessness. Importantly, this person is a librarian (but not of the "holder or secrets" sort).
The first variant (on the left) leaned a bit too much into the stereotype, and she looked a bit plain. As usual, small things can make a big change. In this case it was the haircut.
We also took the opportunity to add some "low tech far future" details.

So, this character was a bit more difficult to get right, because his main trait is a bit intangible.
We needed someone who:
- runs a hostel that serves as the player's hideout
- is a local leader and basically a radical leftwinger, but not the kind that writes lenghty essays
- is definitely very smart
- ...and his main trait is an aura of untrustworthiness.

There are two schools of concept art. In one approach, the art is mainly a marketing tool and is there to sell your game to the publisher (not the audience).
In the other approach, the one I prefer, the art is mainly a discovery tool. In this case, the artist and I aren't looking for a cooler-looking "pistol" (it doesn't actually shoot), but one that's closer to the game's lore (the item is a few hundred years old, hence wear and tear).
