I've been struggling to learn and speak Lakota for about 9 years now. It became harder after switching careers to programming. My energy for the effort it takes is spent most days.
Additionally, it's painful. It can be a reminder of what I've lost in life, and I have no other speakers around.
But today, my son ... no, čiŋkší joined me in saying "ziškópela" while we ate a banana. Zi is yellow, and škopela is little yellow curve.
It may not seem much, but it resists our erasure.

People are graded on a curve.
It doesn't matter what the average is.
