    @Moon what did exist were Brotherhoods, which were basically just racist gangs. Unions had not been formalized in the west yet.

    The book "Good, Reliable, White Men: Railroad Brotherhoods" [1] covers this, which dovetails into the book I have "Sundown Towns" [2].
