So it allows people to graduate with this degree, with a designation that they are an expert in the field and which they have no substantive knowledge of whatsoever. **Most traffic engineering programs in the U.S. do not have a single course that covers the issue of road safety.** If they get it at all, they get it, at best, as a lecture—it is part of a class on traffic engineering, on building streets for high speeds.” Research corroborates this. One study surveyed 117 transportation engineering programs in the U.S. Less than 25 percent self-identified as offering a safety course, and when the researchers looked into it, a third of the courses were actually just traffic engineering and highway design courses—teaching the same old rules, not safety at all.
