“I say this as somebody with a PhD in civil and environmental engineering from a wonderful university. Traffic engineering is a fraud discipline,” Dumbaugh declares. “It presumes knowledge on road safety that it doesn’t have and it educates people generation after generation on information that is incorrect. So it allows people to graduate with this degree, with a designation that they are an expert in the field and which they have no substantive knowledge of whatsoever. **Most traffic engineering programs in the U.S. do not have a single course that covers the issue of road safety.** If they get it at all, they get it, at best, as a lecture—it is part of a class on traffic engineering, on building streets for high speeds.” Research corroborates this. One study surveyed 117 transportation engineering programs in the U.S. Less than 25 percent self-identified as offering a safety course, and when the researchers looked into it, a third of the courses were actually just traffic engineering and highway design courses—teaching the same old rules, not safety at all.
