Chiu, 2018.32.3 Subject: Hatshepsut is described by Egyptologists James Henry Breasted as "the first great woman in history of whom we are informed." She is widely regarded as one of the most successful and long-reigning Pharoahs. Judy Chicago chose to feature her on one of 39 place settings set around a large triangular table in her installation 'The Dinner Party' (1974--79). Each place setting honored an important historical woman; the names of 999 additional influental woman appeared on the tile floor. Artist: Born in Chicago, Judith Cohen changed her name to Judy Chicago in 1970 to renounce paternalistic naming conventions. She led feminist programs for women artists at California Institute for the Arts, and eventually became a feminist art icon.
