@kingrat Can you explain the mechanism to me? Because I feel like if people stopped buying there would be a glut of money lying around and the dollar's value would drop lower? Or does the corresponding glut of production offset that?
I am not an economist, but in my understanding if consumers refusing to pay lowers the prices...the cause was not truly inflation in the first place? Please correct me if I'm totally off base.
Just a stunning amount of naivete when people, even well-intentioned people, talk about Oklahoma wanting to teach about "religion in schools" and whether that's OK. We already teach about religion in the social studies curriculum. What Oklahoma and other states want to do is enshrine an ahistorical, conservative, faith-based interpretation of Christianity in public school classrooms. That's not religious studies. That's indoctrination.
I guess it's a blessing (or a sign of my deep naivete, whatever) that after all this time I can still be shocked, but the fact that President Biden called the family of the guy who was killed during the Trump assassination attempt and *Donald Trump has not.*
Can anyone give me an example that isn't 'he promotes a policy that I think is morally questionable or incorrect ' that demonstrates that Biden is *mentally unfit* to be president? Again, *not* 'he does shit I disagree with.' This is in response to a post I saw that genuinely baffles me.
Greg Sargent says he was told "The Biden campaign has no plans for paid ads involving the verdict." Goddammit. They better change that with a quickness. [Edit: somebody over on Bluesky noted that they must think that if Biden himself emphasizes it, it will make it look more like a political prosecution, and that's not a terrible point.]
I was under the impression that we learned in WWI that chemical weapons were basically unusable because of, you know, the wind. But no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of police. Also this awesome sentence "Tear gases are banned for military use, but law enforcement agencies are allowed to use them for domestic circumstances, like riot control." [Gift link]
Can the President just stop making own goals with regard to this????? It is MADDENING. I don't think it's only political calculus, I think he genuinely believes this shit. But it's both morally horrendous *and* as far as I can tell terrible political calculus. Edit: and I say this as someone who is fighting like hell for his re-election.
I see a lot of folks on here who say they give books a predetermined amount of reading time, like a chapter, before giving up. Anyone else who, like me, often gives them two pages or fewer? #bookstodon
Something that Feminism-Appropriating Reactionary Transphobes ignore is that attacks on trans people are also deeply dangerous for cis gender-non-conforming people. This is especially true for Black women, whom our white supremacist culture masculinizes.
Just in case this discourse starts again, because I saw a post about the anniversary of the first major Nazi book burning: Magnus Hirschfeld's work was targeted *both* because it was about queer and trans identities AND because he was Jewish. The Nazis saw these things as linked, with the Jews as the source of cultural perversion.
