The #AIAct must empower people through accountability & transparency by including:

📜 required fundamental rights impact assessments by deployers

🗃️ use of high-risk AI to be registered in European database

📢 right to lodge complaints & seek remedy on violation of rights

There must be limits on harmful and discriminatory #surveillance by law enforcement using AI systems. This means bans on:

👁️all remote biometric identification in public

❌ AI systems in migration used to curtail migration

🛑 discriminatory AI like predictive policing systems

When AI systems are used for law enforcement and migration control, there is an even higher risk of harm and violations of fundamental rights, especially for already marginalised communities.

✊🏾We need an #AIAct that puts people first and prioritises our #FundamentalRights.

The UK government monitors migrants’ GPS location 24/7 using ankle tags.

✊🏾 Over 250,000 people are calling on MEPs to BAN biometric #MassSurveillance #BMS such as "real-time" and "post" remote biometric identification.

This week, we took the people's demands to MEPs to make our voices heard!

Complex social problems like child sexual abuse need serious redress 🙅🏾♀️BUT using these problems as emotionally evocative pretexts to justify the elimination of #privacy will not solve them.

@signalapp's @Mer__edith explained that #CSAR will never work technologically.

Automated behavioural analysis – these practices can unfairly mark people out as suspicious or criminalise their use of public spaces and should be prohibited.

❌ Why do we call for bans?

Some #AI systems are simply too harmful to be allowed. They exacerbate structural imbalances of power & harm the most marginalised in society.

We cannot put the burden on people affected to fight the use of such systems.

??♀️ #AI systems are used to discriminate & profile people, deciding who is credible, risky or harmful on the basis of prejudiced assumptions.

Increasingly the use of ‘predictive’ analytics to map where ‘illegal’ movement is happening & sending punitive responses.

Migration and Technology Monitor, Platform for Undocumented Migrants, Access Now & a wide coalition of 200 orgs and academics have been calling for MEPs to protect people on the move by prohibiting these uses of AI in migration in the #AIAct.

Emotion recognition - MEPs need to prohibit systems from detecting or inferring emotion on the basic data about our appearance or behaviour

These systems are based on racist pseudo-science and should not be allowed.

#AI systems must not be used to infer or predict our race, sexuality, gender, ability.

Such systems are inherently discriminatory & can be used for harmful outcomes, such as the policing of access to public bathrooms for trans & non-binary people.
