@persagen I wish people would stop referring to the far right as being somehow "populists". They are not. They are "fake populists". Genuine populism has its roots in 1890's Kansas in an early alliance of radical farmers and the early labour movement They called for the nationalization of the banks and the railroads among other things. The FAKE POPULISTS of the right use the culture war to rally the working class in support of a ruling class agenda. There is a difference.

@persagen I honestly think that Canadians concerned about the rise of the PP Boy right-wing should learn from US historian Thomas Frank, who has studied populism, both real and fake, right back to the coining of the term in the 1890's.

We could avoid the kind of horrid politics south of the border that are now blowing north.

@Geoffberner @persagen I think we should be concerned about PP getting in power, but I also think that we should be concerned about JT shifting to the right. We are seeing that already whether it be in the economic and social sphere, or in the environmental sphere.

@persagen @Geoffberner The trick is to build mass social movements such that regardless as to who is in power, they will back off. We need politicians who are afraid of the people.

A case in point. In Ontario Doug Ford backed off on over riding the constitution against education workers after being threatened with a #generalstrike
