From yesterday’s walk the biggest moth EVER! Ok the biggest moth in Europe maybe…the giant peacock moth. Difficult to get a clear photo without disturbing it - hand in one photo for scale!

@JimsPhotos I love the song of a willow warbler. I know that better than a visual id. Beautiful photo.

@JimsPhotos the chiffchaff is like ‘SPRING’! And I absolutely love it for that. But after a while it’s just ‘oh another chiffchaff’. The willow warbler is much more musical. I’ve been listening out, but haven’t yet heard one this year.

I was headed out to do the food shopping earlier but saw there’d been another dusting of snow on the moor and I had boots in the car so…

I passed the sledging hordes on Haytor and went to my happy place, the solitude of Emsworthy Mire nature reserve. Only a smattering of the white stuff but still pretty.

Not having my camera I obviously had the most magical wildlife encounters. Treecreepers, goldcrests and a beautiful fox!

Now to food shopping, in my muddy jeans.

Rubbish phone pic but can just about make out the fox in the middle of the mire in first photo and also paw tracks on the boardwalk.

Smarty pants squirrel 🐿️

The adjacent feeder can still hold onto its ‘squirrel-proof’ claim.

My work is in protecting and championing public rights of way and access for all to enjoy. An unusual fork in the path from a background in environmental science. Still passionate about both.

I love walking - exploring ancient ways and losing myself in nature.

Mainly sharing photos and musings about all these subjects, with maybe some home-baking thrown in.

I was idly reading our local newsletter at lunchtime. In between the garage door /new kitchen type adverts was the news that our town council has declared itself pesticide-free! It will stop using pesticides and reduce mowing etc to help pollinators. It is also going to produce a pesticide-free gardening guide for residents and run a kerbside pesticide amnesty so people can dispose of pesticides and weed killers. Good things do happen in Newton Abbot!

This oak growing beside a Dartmoor river is hosting a fine collection of mosses, polypody ferns & lichens - although I suspect someone may have given certain lichen a helping hand. That’s surely not a natural growth pattern 🤔

@NilaJones @feditips I saw a post which said that it’s possible to set preferences so that posts are not searchable in external search engines - that might help you. But I can’t find that option in my preferences - maybe not available with all instances?

@feditips one question that’s been bugging me is whether it’s possible to search within one’s own toots? The new search function is great but it doesn’t seem to have that functionality. Thank you!
