It’s probably a good idea to repost this incredibly prophetic cartoon from 2014 at regular intervals because every day I see people who still haven’t fully imbibed its message. Apologies if it’s old hat to you.
@chargrille@GottaLaff@NorCal_Lynne Exactly. Half-measures like temporary suspensions or deleting posts really serve only one purpose - they educate bad actors on how the rules work and how to get around them to keep posting hateful shit.
If Threads quickly balloons to half a billion users (not impossible!), what reason would zuckerberg have to give a fuck about ActivityPub and all the headaches it would inevitably bring?
Seems to me there’s a very predictable result coming if Threads does federate with ActivityPub. Mastodon’s privacy-oriented culture and Facebook’s greedy data-grabbing demands are headed for a collision.
With 30 million new signups in a single day, don’t be surprised if Zuckerberg doesn’t keep his promise to federate Threads with ActivityPub, and just keeps everyone inside his walled garden.
Zuckerberg now says Threads has 70 million signups. In its first two days. Of course, it’s simple for anyone with an Instagram account to sign up, but that’s the whole point.
I wanted to give Threads a chance, so I used it for a little while. Hey, look at all the brands posting unfunny attempts to be funny! And hey, Moms for Liberty and LibsOfTikTok doing the same evil shit they do on Twitter! Paris Hilton! Paid blue checks everywhere!
Not to put too fine a point on it, but Threads fucking stinks.
If you have an iPhone, go to the App Store and check out the App Privacy section for the Threads app. They want EVERYTHING - health info, financial info, purchases, search history, browser history, location, “sensitive info” (whatever that is). It’s unfuckingbelievable.
The internet is lousy with spammers and scammers; that's not news. But people talking about defederating mastodon.social because it’s getting popular enough to attract spam attacks are essentially giving the spammers and scammers the power to shut down any federated site. That doesn’t seem like a very good way to handle the problem. At all.
I just saw an article with the subtitle, “Is it time to do away with the monarchy?” and I was like, where have you been for the past 500 years? It’s BEEN time.
Seriously? A quick note: if someone wants to come at me for my website the way it was almost 20 years ago after doing a quick Google search, I’m just gonna block and move on. I’ve already said everything I have to say about that, many times over, and I’m not interested in doing the sackcloth and ashes bit any more.
