DeWine adds poison pills in calling legislature into special session to put Biden on the ballot - cleveland.com
"You may think that Gov. Mike DeWine is a hero for forcing the legislature back in session to pass a bill to get President Joe Biden on the November ballot in Ohio (”‘This is ridiculous ... an absurd situation.’ Gov. DeWine calls for special session to ensure president is on the November ballot,” May 24). But, beneath all his talk (buried in his proclamation), he is asking the legislature to also pass poison pills to make it more difficult for citizens to pass ballot issues, which is the only way we have left to fight a gerrymandered legislature that does not act in our interests." https://www.cleveland.com/letters/2024/05/dewine-adds-poison-pills-in-calling-legislature-into-special-session-to-put-biden-on-the-ballot.html
"Pete Aguilar @PeteAguilar I'm so angry - House Republicans have introduced legislation to repeal the $35/month cap on insulin that Democrats passed for seniors on Medicare.
"I need you to retweet and spread the word about this. Every voter needs to know."
Sawyer Hackett on X: "Wow. After Ted Cruz snuck a line into the FAA bill to make it harder to get refunds for canceled flights, Dems successfully added an amendment to reverse it. The bill will now codify Biden’s new rule guaranteeing automatic refunds." / X https://twitter.com/SawyerHackett/status/1787961213026267611
"This is a brief thread from a NYT-bestselling Trump biographer on what everyone—literally everyone—is missing about the 34 felonies Donald Trump committed to win the 2016 presidential election. This will change how you understand the 2016 election cycle."
I've been wondering why Texas and other red states (Florida, most recently) have been outlawing water and rest breaks for construction workers, and it comes down to the definition of "conservative" from Corey Robin: "a conservative is someone who believes that a minority of people were born to rule, and that everyone else was born to follow their rules, and that the world is in harmony when the born rulers are in charge."
We know water and rest breaks keep workers healthy and able to do their jobs, so why the hell do you want to risk your worker getting heat-stroke and unable to do their work?
In order to assert your dominance.
As Cory Doctorow says "The conservative project of the past 40 years has been to reverse this: to return the great majority of us to the status of desperate, forelock-tugging plebs who know our places".
"Porpoises communicate with narrow-band, high-frequency clicks, known to those in the clicking cetacean business as NBHF clicks. Dolphins on the other hand like to swim around whistling, a sound porpoises never make.
Upon reviewing the recordings, the researchers realized Kylie “definitely identifies as a porpoise,” National Geographic reports co-author on the paper David Nairn, who studies porpoises in the area, said. Not only did Kylie not whistle like other dolphins, but even when alone she could be heard using sounds that resembled the NBHF clicks associated with porpoises.
Why Clouds Vanish During Solar Eclipses - Atlas Obscura
"In 1972, a group of umbraphiles gathered in Nova Scotia to witness a total solar eclipse. Just before the celestial event was to begin, clouds completely obscured the view. One of the group members, now-retired geoscientist Steve Dutch, recalled that, as the eclipse began, the clouds suddenly fled. "All of us had perfect views," he wrote in an online post.
The clearing wasn’t a fluke or divine intervention, but the now-documented reaction of certain kinds of clouds to solar eclipses.
Geoengineers Propose Freezing Water Vapor to Stop Global Warming - Boing Boing
"Geoengineers have a bold new idea in the battle to slow climate change. According to Gizmodo, water vapor trapped 4 to 50 miles above earth acts as a greenhouse gas. Joshua Schwarz, researcher at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Earth System Research Laboratory, believes that water vapor could be reduced by adding ice-forming nuclei to the atmosphere.
It's the way Dictator wannabes rise to power: by first normalizing their seemingly unbelievable claims to total authority - and then gradually enacting what they have succeeded in making seem entirely normal and unsurprising ...
