"Oh no, someone had a wrong opinion on a microblogging platform!"
Pick a response: > Block or mute and move on > DM it to your friend and bitch about it > Reply with a polite, good-faith question about what they think about your perspective on the issue. Assume you are experiencing context collapse and don't fully know where they're coming from.
https://archive.is/20230619023931/https://strangematters.coop/frederic-s-lee-profile-part-one/#selection-2423.244-2423.524 I read this piece about heterodox economics and one of its big points is that supply and demand curves aren’t real, and prices are set with a markup over expenses according to the values of price administrator, not “based on demand”. so all the YIMBY shit about “build more housing to bring costs down” is complete bullshit. if the landlords won’t self regulate then we have to do it with force.
wild to me how _so_ many people have ideas for how to fix portland's epidemic of homelessness and how I basically never hear anyone talking about renter's protections, rent control, taxing landlords (particularly non-local firms!), and trying to tip the scales so more people become owners vs. renters. like what if we actually went to the source of "what is the situation that transfers a person from a home to the street"
A consistent ttrpg pet peeve of mine is invoking “the camera” as a default, known concept. What camera??? ttrpgs draw from deep roots of oral storytelling, so viewing the fiction through an imaginary screen is an unnecessary layer of indirection.
Imagine reading a book and out of nowhere it was like “and then the camera pans over to show the monster behind her”. It feels like our vocabulary has been so overtaken by screen metaphor that we’ve collectively forgotten what a story is!
@jalcine good post! very much agree that this desire to have a singular “mastodon community norms” is super destructive and that microblogging seems fundamentally flawed. I keep wondering how much of this is intrinsic and how much is coincidence of who is making the technical decisions.
