so.. upstream mastodon for android got rid of the alt text viewers that expand when you click the ALT badge and replaced them with bottom sheets (that open when the ALT badge is pressed)... like the one that i implemented before the ALT badges were even a thing
i mean, fair, not blaming anyone, it's just funny how i implement something, upstream does it differently (i actually liked the expanding ALT badge thingies!), time passes and upstream re-implements it similar to how i initially did
@apps in my experience, most markdown parsers aren't affected by german de-gendering markers such as entwickler*innen: *this*, for example, would render as markdown, but x*this*x wouldn't (because there's no space/parentheis/period/etc around)
@apps (apart from that, i believe servers should handle markdown parsing and just return the appropriate html. but yeah, i know, mastodon't, but virtually every fork or other server does)
with open source development, it helps so much to remember that you're not a business but a human being and that users of your app aren't customers; to take breaks as you need them, especially if you also have a "real" job, other responsibilities, are taking a vacation or just need time for your mental health; letting other things (nothing/taking breaks counts as "other things") take priority
Hi! I'm Megalodon – the pink fork of Mastodon for Android. I exist because the official app is lacking many important features, which I intend to bring back!
the longer i wait for a new production release, the higher the expectations, huh? anyway, just released one, but don't expect it to be perfect! it never was, never will be. but it has some really, really cool features, compared to the previous version! i don't know when the play store or izzy's repo will publish the new version, but it's only a matter of time. who knows, maybe there will be a few hot fix releases the coming days?
@apps If I do that, I could still have cases like this:
* My Mastodon account is set to English * My phone could be set to German * Megalodon would display a translate button for English posts, but not for German posts * Mastodon would try to translate English posts to English
…all because I display the translate button for the wrong language. I think I might actually go for the HTML scraping approach to get the right language ?
@apps Would do that as a last resort, but I can never be sure that it's the correct one and that translation will work… Kind of a shame the translation endpoint doesn't take a target language parameter
Does anyone know a way to query the logged-in account's locale using the Mastodon API? From what I can tell, I need this to determine whether to show the Translate button or not.
