Accenture has laid of 11,000 workers (1.3% of staff) as part of their program to exit people who cannot be retrained for the AI age. They expect layoffs to continue through November.

I wonder if this is people who didn’t meet some threshold of AI tools usage or people in roles eliminated due to AI productivity gains who don’t have skills for other roles?

This article highlights a trend I’ve observed from talking to peers where adoption of AI in the workplace results in people generating work product that looks correct but is actually mediocre, misleading or mistaken in its core assumptions.

It requires you to interpret, correct or redo the work. It is workslop and it’s getting worse every day.

The key similarity between the AI bubble and the dotcom bubble is spending a lot in anticipation of unseen demand. Bain & Co estimates the AI industry needs $2T in revenue to justify the current spending and expects we’ll be short $800B.

Question is what’s the AI equivalent of “everyone has a smartphone & broadband” which is what created the internet boom following the dotcom bubble?

It’s an astute observation that modern conservatives (MAGA) have strayed so far from traditional American ideals that they can’t quote Lincoln or Reagan anymore.

In fact they have more in common with despotic regimes from the 19th & 20th century than American democracy. From United States to a divided country.

This article argues we are in not one but three AI bubbles.

1. A classic financial bubble where companies are overvalued.

2. An infrastructure bubble where big tech are overbuilding data centers.

3. A hype bubble where the capabilities of the technology are far below the promises of its proponents.

There’s an official clarification that the $100K fee on H-1B workers only applies to new applications after tomorrow.

I’ve seen people argue that given the layoffs and struggles new CS grads have finding jobs that slowing down adding new foreign workers isn’t crazy.

People outside tech don’t understand how huge a hit the $100K/year foreign worker fee is on the industry. 66% of Silicon Valley workers are foreign born.

Even if you assume a subset of them have green cards, that’s still a huge percentage of the industry that will be subject to a $100K fee to renew their status and limits introducing new workers the industry depends on.

Microsoft’s guidance to H-1B employees following the $100K visa fee executive order is essentially to not leave the country and return before Sunday if you’re abroad. Same applies to spouses and kids.

The implication being not to expect them to pay your $100K ransom to enter America.

A perfect example of how right-wing extremism is tolerated while even just pointing it out gets punished. The mainstream media reinforces this dynamic.

A defining characteristic of fascism, that you can find in any textbook on the subject, is picking a powerless minority to scapegoat to unify its base while distracting from the crimes of the government and its allies.

This comes to mind for no particular reason.

The real story that the media has missed is the right wing rhetoric has gone from inspiring violence against Democrats like the shooting of Minnesota lawmakers to violence against conservatives not deemed right wing enough.

Instead the media got sucked into the right wing blame game and now @wsj, the @guardian and others are walking back coverage.
