@whitequark Yes, I know that they are still in the ISA, but as you said, nobody uses them. Or rather, I've not even once heard of anyone using segment registers on x86_64 explicitly. CS, DS and SS just get initialized at the start, often to the same value, and that's it. Last time I've seen ES being used, was in some code for DOS.

@whitequark I wonder how many people today still know what far pointers/far calls are, without looking it up. It's been decades, since I last heard anyone talk about them.

@whitequark ISO is IMHO the least offensive of those. Almost all of their standards are cheap, extremely so. They are somewhere between 50CHF and 400CHF.. That's affordable. Not only that, ISO allows libraries to distribute their standards for free to anyone. You have no idea how many ISO standards I have a copy of. And all I did was ask my local library.

There are plenty of other organisations that make their standards thousands of € and thus only affordable if you need them for business.

How to use a UK power plug properly.

We live in interesting times. Friend of mine is a scientist in France. He just got briefing on what to do when traveling to the US. He was told to use an empty, freshly installed laptop with nothing but his presentation on it. Uninstall all messengers and social media. If he has to surrender any of his devices even for a minute, he shall get it checked by the French secret service for back-doors and Trojans.

I guess I rather stay home than going to a conference in the US.
