I'm Michael Stepner, and I'm an economist studying the relationship between health and economic inequality. I'm most excited about work that reveals how public policy can improve the health and financial security of low-income populations. @LeoSammallahti I chose to join Social.Coop after seeking out an instance with:

1. A sustainable financial model

--> Servers aren't free! And in the long-run, the finances will determine how long an instance sticks around and who ultimately controls it.

2. A conscientious process for governance and moderation.

--> Who am I trusting with my data and DMs?
--> Who is responsible for keeping the nazis out, and making decisions in harder cases?

I started with an account on a big open server, then started reading the server descriptions of the Mastodon instances chosen by people I respect.

I found Social.Coop after reading a post by @natematias and then checking out the wiki.

Migrating my account to a new server was delightfully quite seamless!
