Can anyone recommend a #Canadian employment attorney that is good and has a reasonable rate? I am in the US and (if some $ comes through) am looking into hiring a person who happens to be Canadian. Apparently it's complicated.

I was on the road today when Jackson Browne's 1973 song "Doctor, My Eyes" came on the radio. I'd never listened closely to the lyrics. Musically, it's this fast, upbeat shuffle. But the poem is a song of desperation... about how we exile unwanted feelings, until a day comes that we can't feel anything at all.

I was in tears myself by the end. Because I've been feeling that numbness creeping up for quite a while. And he managed to touch it: that awful "prize" for learning how not to cry.

I (a software engineer) do wish we could just come out and say full-throated that we’re against AI. For all the reasons.

- AI is anti-learning, anti-comprehension while engineering depends on learning and comprehension

- AI aims to roll back personal computing and force everyone back on monopoly platforms.

- AI favors shitty, unmaintainable systems

- AI is torching the biosphere. And the infosphere we need to survive a burning planet.

@cwebber hey, I didn't mean this to be aimed at you in particular and I'm sorry my reply derailed your main point, which is important. My frustration is about a whole culture (and power system) that has formed around the use of GenAI in software engineering. You are far from being the poster child for that culture and I didn't need to bring my rage to your mentions.

I’m looking to hire an artist for a small project.

My mom’s 87 and in a nursing facility. She loves adult coloring books and has covered the walls of her room with her work. She especially likes animal designs and gives them names and stories. I keep her supplied with books, but she wants DONKEYS. And I haven’t found her a book with a good donkey design. I’d like to commission a coloring-book style line drawing similar to this photo of our boys. Interested? Hit me up in DMs. #asstodon

Universities who sign these multimillion dollar contracts to provide student and staff with access to LLMs should lose their accreditation. These tools exist to roll back human learning at all levels of society and are directly in opposition to the mission of a university. May as well close the school library. Why not?

Donkeys: Yeah, like, we broke one of our toys and one of us has probably swallowed a large piece of it, but you could get us a new one. And then maybe call the vet.

Both donkeys were just braying at top volume in a way I’d never heard. I came out of the house in time to see them running fast and loud toward a pair of coyotes on the property. One coyote was chasing the other and the donkeys do NOT allow that kind of predatory behavior on their land. #asstodon

Interesting thing: once the chasing coyote had been run off by the donkeys, the other one—perceiving he’d been protected—stuck around. And the donkeys didn’t hold his coyote-ness against him: they regarded him as friendly since he displayed no threatening behavior. Very cool to see. #asstodon

0° F out here but the burritos don’t seem to mind the cold much. Warmed by their winter tortillas and warm hearts. 💞
