    >Every female employee of the NSW police force who participated in a wide-ranging review into its culture had experienced or observed “overt or covert harassment, undermining and belittlement”, a scathing report has found. [There is...] a rampant culture of bullying, sexual harassment and discrimination [....] More than 5,000 current and former staff engaged with the review, either through face-to-face interviews, online surveys, written submissions or group discussions.

    >One interviewee said, "bullying is as much a part of this organisation as wearing a uniform"
    >
    >Those who speak up risk being targeted, denied promotions, or having workplace benefits and opportunities withdrawn [...] There is a very real fear of being bullied, isolated, or ostracised by colleagues and management. [...]
    >
    >The review also found a widespread culture of "serious stigma" when officers sought mental health support [...]
    >
    >[M]any women said there was still a belief in some parts of the organisation that "women are not suited to policing" and some officers "speak openly about not liking women on the force".

That a new multi-year detailed independent investigation has confirmed (once again) that NSW Police has a deeply ingrained toxic internal culture is not really the main news here (at least, not to anyone paying attention).

Instead, let's focus on two things.

    1. Can we now agree that this is not 'a few bad apples'?
After yet another major report into systemic nature of racism, misogyny, nepotism, bullying and violence in yet another police force, can we start to consider that maybe there is something about this institution that needs to fundamentally change? That our whole notion of modern policing might be fundamentally faulty?

Chris Minns, NSW Premier: "for the sake of Social Cohesion™, we're inviting a wanted war criminal from a rogue state to visit, granting police extraordinary emergency powers to forcefully suppress the expression of non-approved messages in non-approved locations, and installing extra Social Cohesion™ fences and barriers in the middle of the city. In order to ensure maximum Social Cohesion™ please don't come into the city, and if you do, then disobeying the instructions of one of the 3,000 Social Cohesion™ officers will result in a $5,000 fine. This is for your own good. You will cohere, or else."

The UK government arresting 166 citizens (and counting) for standing in public with hand-drawn signs opposing #genocide, #starvation, #extermination, #ForcedDisplacement and other #CrimesAgainstHumanity: "This is terrorism!"

This statement is, of course, correct.

This *is* indeed a tactic of terror, deploying violence and the threat of violence against civilians to pursue a political agenda through fear. However, it is not the dignified grandmothers, retired magistrates, and scores of other ordinary people courageously upholding the longstanding and noble tradition of #nonviolent #DirectAction for social justice who are engaging in #terrorism.

@oatmeal @academicchatter @israel @palestine 'posthumously recognised as an IDF casualty'.

The Israeli military dress up as doctors to murder patients in a hospital, force Palestinian hostages to wear IDF uniforms and act as human shields, and now claim to posthumously alter the legal status of a putative civilian who was potentially damaging cultural heritage.

Documenting arbitrary executions, deliberate starvation & systematic deprivation of shelter, medical care, and other essentials by Israeli forces in northern Gaza.

The 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, unanimously adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, creates a positive obligation on all nations to prevent genocidal violence, an obligation which almost every nation is currently failing, with some being directly and actively complicit to greater or lesser degrees, via providing weapons and diplomatic support to Israel even as the slaughter continues.

Whether there shall remain any shred of international humanitarian law left after the Gaza genocide is a question increasingly likely to be answered in the negative, a casualty of this horrific crime that even all those willing to consider Palestinians as less than fully human will come to regret in the lawless days ahead.

Based on previous experiences with displaced populations, 500,000 or more Gazans could die of preventable diseases in the coming months due to illegal Israeli destruction of the health system and forced mass displacement.

Ethics is about asking good questions, not just reaching a good answer. For centuries people have debated: "is it ethical to steal bread if your family is starving?". But there's a more pressing question: "is it ethical to sell bread when people are starving?"
