A reminder that having no Speaker means the House of Representatives can't conduct any business, and a reminder that THAT'S WHAT THE REPUBLICAN EXTREMISTS WANT. To them it's a feature, not a bug.
"The September temperatures data are mind-blowing. They're beyond anything we climate scientists have expected to see at this point," said Dr. Peter Gleick. #climatechange
As more mainstream media open accounts here on Mastodon, try to follow them. As they build up audiences here, it will make it easier for them to abandon that Xhit site over there.
Does anyone have a list of good media accounts here?
I've just learned that Meta has, without my permission and in violation of my copyright, used at least one of my books to help train their generative AI, and I'm not down with that.
Dr Peter Gleick, a co-founder of the California-based Pacific Institute, said Murdoch was responsible for pushing “decades of dangerous #climate misinformation and denial to millions of people”. “His distortions have influenced policymakers and the public and wasted critical time that should have been spent slowing the climate crises we now see all around us.... “When our history is written, and the final roster of climate villains is posted, #Murdoch will be at the top.” https://www.theguardian.com/media/2023/sep/23/rupert-murdoch-climate-change-denial
Incredible WSJ article on Exxon's efforts to prevent action on #climate change.
“If a worldwide consensus emerges that action is needed to mitigate against Greenhouse gas effects, substantial negative impacts on Exxon could occur,” wrote Sprow [Exxon's head of Research]. “Any additional R&D efforts within Corporate Research on Greenhouse should have two primary purposes: 1. Protect the value of our resources (oil, gas, coal). 2. Preserve Exxon’s business options.”
Three years worth of rain fell in two days in Greece, another manifestation of the intensification of the #climate long predicted by climate scientists. #water risks are among the worst. 💦
A few years ago I was honored with the Carl Sagan Prize for Science Popularization, a thrill because I admired his willingness & ability to communicate science to the public at a time when scientists weren't encouraged to speak out or rewarded for doing so.
But he also said things that, even today, resonate deeply in our present political crises. Here's one of those things relevant to today's Republican party.
"Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” Carl Sagan
I think it's safe to say that all those economists who said the costs of climate change weren't going to be high were staggeringly, dangerously, wrong. It's the climate of the PLANET, FFS.
The conservative @catoinstitute is finally calling it quits on Trump. While everything they say in this piece is right (he's an "inveterate liar," has contempt for justice and law, etc.), all this has been known for YEARS. It seems they're only abandoning him now because they know he's going to jail ("his goose is cooked," he's "toast"). Not exactly a profile in courage.
If you don't think Elon Musk will use his control of Starlink's space-based internet monopoly to further his right-wing, authoritative, anti-democratic goals, you're not watching him do exactly that right now with his control of Twitter.
I can't get over the story of the Texas professor suspended for criticizing the Lt.Governor. This is how fu**ed up this is:
The conservative student should have known better; her conservative mother should have known better; the Lt.Gov should have known better; the Lt.Gov's staff should have known better; and the University should have known better. Any ONE of them should have shut down the complaint and stood up for free speech. But every one of them went full fascist.
