So I read the election files and the main takeaways, aside from a zillion ineligible people registered to vote, are: - All the PII has probably been breached and - Voting machines and registration systems have vulns too So states and counties running election related things (but also the rest of you) should do the following: - Back up data files regularly - Audit data integrity and implement alerts - Test out your backups - Watch out for phishing, re-used passwords, enable MFA - Watch out for ransomware, patch, least privilege - Do network segmentation and not once was AI mentioned. Honestly kind of impressed.
Yes, I have double-checked the bucket. No keys were leaked or anything added. It's not a phishing email as I suspected at first. No other service usage is shown. This is literally what the AWS console is showing me. It's been fun knowing y'all.
My entire AWS account I nearly forgot about has one bucket in glacier deep archive that totals to less than 1 TB, that cost less than a quarter per month. They have decided to start charging me over $100 billion per month.
@fogti@52fighters Oh, I'm deep in work where AI is being pulled in, suggested to replace people, where we deal with AI outputs, etc.
The economic uncertainty is real but I'm specifically reacting to 1. people literally comparing it to slavery, which I ridicule, because it is ridiculous, 2. all of the "doing it by hand builds character" takes, like yes, everything else from arithmetic to spelling you should learn manually first but you should then also learn the automation and use it where it makes sense (Linus is right in that e.g. bugfinding is dramatically improved), and 3. I have an almond milk jug in my fridge that consumed more water than probably a lifetime of ChatGPT will, and I've seen a billion newly-concerned-about-water-usage takes that never mention this since they are 100% a moral panic that is 100% just the luddite meme.
I've seen many of you in person, I know you're over 40.
It's so funny hearing for decades Douglas Adams' quote "Anything invented after you’re thirty-five is against the natural order of things." then they turn 40, new tech get invented and bam! "WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE I PUSHED THE PLOW BY HAND. WOULD YOU THINK SLAVERY IS A MORAL ISSUE?! THESE STEAM ENGINES ARE CORRUPTING THE MORAL FIBER
Look, I know you all think this account is funded by the owl industry. But that's not true. That's absurd. I don't think owls even have an industry to promote. On an unrelated note, today's Low Quality Ad is for this cute Stuffed Owl. https://collabs.shop/n7skhh
"quick! disable this setting that uploads the whole repo!" OK, sure, then it'll just upload every file that has any word that sounds like anything related to anything it's working on. You think that's security? Vibes-based flailing is not an effective IP-protection strategy.
People upset that cloud AI coding assistants send your code to the cloud: did, uh, you have any idea how these things work? What exactly were you expecting?
Nothing is certain, but it seems like frontrunners to replace Lindsey Graham are likely to be far better on privacy (encryption/backdoors/age verification) than Graham was.
Remember how there was rent-a-coder, then vworker, now freelancer. Has AI killed freelancing coders? I've seen the death-of-stackoverflow charts but haven't seen any reporting on these.
