This was pricey but we have such a good Defoe collection I was surprised we didn't have it. His argument that sex for pleasure without the possibility of conception was fornication probably didn't make him a lot of friends but what was really shocking was the title, which was swiftly canceled and reissued as "A Treatise Concerning the Use and Abuse of the Marriage Bed," making the original title page a considerable rarity.

Shelfreading update: over the last three days, we looked at 5000 titles and identified 300 call numbers that weren’t in HOLLIS, our online catalog. With the caveats that not all of those will turn out to be completely uncataloged, and that we intentionally started with the area we thought would have the highest rate of problems, that’s potentially a major gain in research potential for the collection in our first attempt.

The highlight of my shift this afternoon was finding a book given to Harvard to rebuild after a 1764 fire that wiped out the library by one of our most important benefactors, the English barrister Thomas Hollis… that wasn’t listed in HOLLIS, his namesake catalog.

I’m all in on Mastodon. If we can’t make a go of this then I’m going to learn to live without social media.

I just spoke with a woman who years ago made a special appointment for me to show her daughter some things from the collection she was very interested in (back when we had a minimum age requirement of 18 in the reading room). Said daughter is now applying to colleges and cites that in her essay as a formative experience in wanting to study history. If you need me for the rest of the day, I will be on Cloud 9.
