I want to write a little bit about Propaganda Headlines today, and the tactics which are used to intentionally obscure the truth, while still, technically conveying factual information. My goal at the end of this is to hopefully make you more aware when propaganda techniques are being used, so you identify them when you encounter them in your daily life.

Fair warning, once you start seeing these, you won't be able to unsee them.

I have identified 5 main ways in which Propaganda Headlines obscure the truth, while simultaneously, being technically factually accurate. They are:

1. Diminishers
2. Omissions
3. Improper Synonyms
4. Grammatical Misdirects
5. Unnecessary Details

In order to do this, we are going to use a recent headline from the New York Times. I want to be clear here, I'm not calling out the NYT specifically, nor do I want to suggest they are the problem, or even the worst perpetrator. They're simply a convenient, recent example, which shows, I think, all the different ways in which Propaganda Headlines - intentionally or not - obscure the truth.
