On the wall of my office; the thing I'm proudest of helping build at Wikimedia Foundation. <3
@wwu US ballots are being mailed out today!
Folks may agree or disagree over the Wikimedia Foundation's handling of the unionization effort, but the election will bring us our official result.
I sincerely hope that WMF US staff get their union through the NLRB election. We've worked hard for it; some of us have paid a heavy price.
It'll all be worth it if they can get a contract that requires just cause for firings and means that disciplinary meetings must allow for presence of a union rep.
Jimmy Wales breaks with WMF leadership on Littler Mendelson "union avoidance" firm:
> I was not aware when I said that no union busting law firms had been hired that Littler Mendelson had been hired. When I found out, I immediately emailed the WMF to say that I think it was a mistake and to recommend firing them immediately.

Getting the WWU-US union going is a key deliverable for our union movement, but it's only one of many.
WWU-UK is in the works as well, with negotiations ongoing and likely leading to statutory recognition soon enough.
We continue to look into organizing in other countries, but the US and the UK are our two biggest workplaces so this is a very important start.
Our intention is for all WMF workers to support each other and lift each other up. What would better represent "the wiki way"?
I just wanna give a personal thanks to everybody out there for all the community support for @wwu
Community pressure *does* work and *has* helped us in negotiations.
Workers at Wikimedia Foundation just want to do their jobs effectively without interference or fear of losing their jobs. And those jobs are to support the communities of editors, readers, outreachers, organizers, fact-checkers, template writers, module debuggers, and more who make Wikipedia and its sister projects happen.
> Workers at the Wikimedia Foundation — the San Francisco-based foundation that hosts Wikipedia — demanded voluntary recognition of their union, Wiki Workers United U.S., on Monday.

> The staff who run the platform say they want a stronger voice in their workplace, better job protections and an end to common practices that make life “precarious for everyday workers,” according to Jeremy Bernick, one of the union organizers.

US & UK branches of Wiki Workers United, the two largest countries in Wikimedia Foundation's staffing, are both officially in the midst of seeking recognition.
WWU-UK is entering formal negotiations because WMF refused voluntary recognition and chose negotiations instead.
It remains to be seen whether WMF will voluntarily recognize the supermajority US union or force staff to go through a formal National Labor Relations Board election.
✊️ Wikimedia is union strong!
softbank guy: "is not the golden goose entitled to the fruits of its labor?"
everyone on the internet: "yes, so unionize your workplace."
Wikimedia Foundation's UK staff -- our second-largest workforce by country -- have officially requested recognition by WMF as a branch of UTAW-CWU (United Tech & Allied Workers)

@LucasWerkmeister I'm still bitter about the Special Edition lol
(Do they have the original cuts on the blu-rays? I might finally break down and get them if so)
@LucasWerkmeister booooooo
I mean sure fine if you wanna have a recut version more power to you, just don't take away the original cut. Every other movie seems to do this fine, why is George Lucas unable to be a normal person?
@LucasWerkmeister hm, there is a 4k edition out these days (of the retconned one ;)), no idea if it's actually a cleaner scan or just an upscale but it'll use more hard drive space when i rip em lol
Wikipedia, and the entire Wikimedia movement, has been a democratic, anti-authoritarian experiment since the day of its inception.
It's a project that matters, something I've been proud to have made a career of.
I spent my 20 years at the Wikimedia Foundation trying to further that experiment on a professional basis, and I have never been prouder of my former colleagues at WMF than I have been these past few months as we've been making @wwu a reality.
You should organize your workplace too.
I just posted this announcement to wikitech-l mailing list.
@evan you can add a list of self-links in special:preferences, which get the rel=me added when you use them on your user page
it's quite clever!
there i think i got my wiki userpage correctly validated as pointing back to my wikis world profile \o/
