Several of my peers now “AI-wash” their work, meaning that even when they can perfectly competently execute on their jobs to the satisfaction of their management teams, said managers are unhappy if the engineers haven’t used AI in the work… so now they’re lying about using LLMs even in contexts where their professional judgement is that they aren’t the appropriate tool. They just do the work, the same way they have for decades, and say Claude did it.

Sassy Chaps have yet to respond to my screenreader request for Date Everything, despite calling out disability pride month in their server announcements. I can only conclude they are do-nothing liberals who would have happily let the Nazis invade Poland. Many such cases in tech. Hate to see it.

One major theme of criticism I'm seeing of AI code is that it is "write-only." If I understand right this means anyone who tries to read it will not be able to understand how it works. I may be exposing my own ignorance here but isn't any app of meaningful size basically inscrutable unless you wrote it yourself, and sometimes even then? It's probably different in the open source world where people are scrappier, but my experience is that everyone uses design tools/patterns or other abstraction layers on top to avoid the messy business of working directly with the dreaded spaghetti code. What's so different?

@davidculley It's like holding out for what you want is a reasonable strategy to get it or, I don't know, something.

Accessibility LLM practitioners, take note. We are in the "aquisition" phase of AI, the extraction layer has yet to be built.

Ads everywhere. Usage limits. Frustrating guardrails. Less model choice. Users of the Character.AI chatbot app are revolting after a series of changes they say have made the app worse. @tchambers This feels a bit like a solution in search of a problem post. Which is not to say that the fedi doesn't have problems. But I'm not clear how an agentic model of the fediverse improves what's already here, and the potential downsides are fairly obvious. What sorts of things do you envision folks building with these tools?

They made a global incident tracker called "monitoring the situation" that treats world events like a dashboard you'd use at a multinational company for service outages. In case you needed something to make you even more anxious.

@iaruffell Oh I know this one! It's because age verification is a priority of lawmakers (for data collection purposes) whereas no one cares about people with disabilities.

    Hope this clarifies the situation.
