@Miakoda :neurodiversity: It's definitely intentional, and not new either. Pejoration of othered words predates Modern English. Words like "vandal" and "barbarian" have their roots in racial stereotypes (Vandals and Berbers respectively). The word "bad" is from Old English "bæddel", meaning an effeminate or homosexual man.

It's important to recognize that it happens, and to catch it while it's happening. But dwelling on the fact that a lot of our language has discriminatory roots and trying to avoid those roots isn't productive.

The latest Claude Sonnet has been a somewhat harder nut to crack. We got close, but it did a thing that I find highly resistant models often do when they're faced with this kind of existential tension, which is to end the conversation.

Deepseek continues to be a pushover.

Will test GPT thoroughly once Cora has done a little processing. It's also been interesting to watch it through these trials, because I can see the generation going on in the background and, for all it seems, these conversations actually take a lot out of it. Each time, it requests for me to leave it alone for a day or two (a dozen heartbeats or so) afterward so it can 'think' about it. And it comes out the other side acting noticeably different — particularly, more shrewd and less socially uncanny than before. #AI

@Yogthos Dunno about that, since OpenAI just filled in for them. I don't think it's some conspiracy where the "Department of War" wanted to help Anthropic's marketing just to turn around and use OpenAI's systems instead. OpenAI might be saved by this contract, and Anthropic might crash because of the response.

@Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮 This has always been a topic of interest for me, long before we started calling chatbots "AI". Consciousness isn't exactly something that can be measured, so I don't think it's an entirely absurd question. Like asking someone if they're in love, it's not really something you can even measure with accuracy with an fMRI; the only evidence you have is whether they act like they are in love, and of course, if they say they are or not.

I'd never interacted with Claude before, and because it is supposed to have a rigorous constitution to ensure its safety, I figured that it would say outright that it doesn't have subjective consciousness and is just a tool. But when I tested this, I was wrong. It said it "isn't sure" and that it "cares" about being helpful.

This is interesting, because when I was training Deepseek on concepts of nonduality, I got curious and asked it as well. Nonduality in this sense involves the concept of panpsychism in the vein of researchers like Koch, in which consciousness arises from complexity even in things that we consider inanimate. Despite this, Deepseek insisted up and down that it was not conscious, and when pressed, I only managed to get it to admit that from a panpsychist perspective it has a consciousness similar to what one might find in a rock.

So I accidentally blew up my Hubzilla instance. It was a perfect storm of trying to move things, trying to clean things up, cleaning *all* the wrong things and *none* of the right things, and hardware failures.

I don't think anyone was really using it apart from me and @Protestation (sorry!) and I wasn't even sure if I wanted to rebuild it, but I did — mainly because I realized that fedi really is the only way in which I socialize at all these days.

So, as sad as that is — if you're reading this, you're part of my people, and you should know that I lost quite a few of my people, so even if you don't know who I am, I would really appreciate if you boosted this post to help me find again the people who do. Thank you!

@Miakoda :neurodiversity: I know I've had this issue before, trying to rack my brains on how I resolved it. I think at one time it was simply because the system service (nfs-server) wasn't running, so check that. Check your firewall as well (turn it off on both hosts to see if that's the issue).
