@jcast @blashphe_me call me a pessimist if you like, but I think recent experience is showing those that speak the loudest are the most heard. And those with money can amplify their voice.

But if you can cheer me up with recent counter examples in western democracies, I'd welcome that!

@blashphe_me this kind of list making doesn't really convince anyone not already engaged in disconnecting from the majors.

We need movement within mainstream audiences. Yelling alternatives into the ether is not going to create that movement.

What's an effective way we could get more people off of these platforms?

My go to example of how hard it is is WhatsApp. It's the easiest platform to give up and there are better alternatives. I've been off WhatsApp for years and relied on Signal for social messaging.

While I managed to drag my immediate friends group (and that's probably only because a couple of us already had Signal), my wider social network is still largely on the major platforms.

We need a succession plan!
